85mm · f/2
The Carl Zeiss Sonnar T* 2/85 ZM is a rare, German-made M-mount lens praised for its brilliant sharpness at f/2 when focus is perfect, and stunning resolution at f/4–f/8. However, it suffers from a notorious 'wobble' defect—three of four copies owned by one reviewer required repair. Build quality is excellent with a smooth focus ring, but the hood is difficult to mount and may contribute to the wobble. Optically, it exhibits purple CA at f/2 in bright highlights, clearing by f/2.8, and its bokeh is pleasing but more 2D than some alternatives. It suits portrait and landscape photographers willing to accept its quirks for unique rendering.
