The Sony DT 50mm F1.8 SAM is a lightweight, plastic-bodied prime for APS-C Sony A-mount cameras, offering a 75mm equivalent field of view. Optically, it is sharp when stopped down to f/2.8 or f/5.6, but soft wide open at f/1.8. Chromatic aberration and distortion are well controlled, though vignetting is noticeable at f/1.8. Build quality is decent for its price, but the focus ring is narrow and loose, and autofocus is noisy. It suits budget-conscious portrait or low-light photographers who can tolerate its limitations.
