The Sony DT 30mm F2.8 Macro SAM is a compact, lightweight macro lens for APS-C Sony SLRs, offering 1:1 magnification at a very close working distance (~2cm). Optically, it delivers very good to excellent center sharpness from f/2.8, peaking at f/5.6-f/11, with slight softness wide-open and diffraction beyond f/11. Weaknesses include higher chromatic aberration at smaller apertures, moderate barrel distortion, and significant vignetting at f/2.8. Build quality is good for its low price, using plastics but with a smooth focus ring. AF is quick but can hunt without a limiter. It suits budget-conscious macro beginners who can work very close to subjects.
