Overview

The Sony DT 18-55mm F3.5-5.6 SAM is a standard kit zoom for APS-C Sony Alpha cameras, offering a 27-83mm equivalent range. Optically, it provides decent center sharpness, especially when stopped down, but corners lag and performance at 55mm is relatively weak. Chromatic aberration is well-controlled except at 18mm, and distortion follows the typical barrel-to-pincushion pattern. Build quality is plasticky with a wobbly inner tube and a narrow manual focus ring. The SAM autofocus is reasonably fast and quiet. It suits beginners or budget-conscious users who can accept its limitations and use in-camera corrections.
