The Canon Extender EF 2x III doubles focal length but reduces aperture by two stops and can degrade image quality. Optically, it performs best with fast, sharp L-series primes like the 300mm f/2.8 or 400mm f/2.8, where it retains detail even on high-density sensors. However, it introduces chromatic aberration, ghosting in challenging light, and softness; one reviewer found images “mushy”. Build is robust and weather-sealed. Autofocus slows, especially in low light. It suits photographers needing extra reach without carrying a super-telephoto, but only when paired with top-tier lenses.
