Overview

The Canon EF 28mm f/2.8 IS USM is a compact, lightweight wide-angle prime with image stabilization. Optically, it delivers high central sharpness even wide open, but edges and corners are weak on full frame due to field curvature; stopped to f/8 it performs well across most of the frame. The non-IS version (EF 28mm f/2.8) has plastic build, noisy autofocus, and twitchy manual focus. The IS version improves build and adds instant manual focus override. It suits APS-C users seeking a sharp normal lens, or full-frame shooters needing a compact, stabilized wide-angle for stopped-down work.
