14mm · f/2.8
The Canon EF 14mm f/2.8L USM is a rectilinear ultra-wide prime with a 114° field of view, suited for architecture due to minimal distortion. Optically, it is reasonably sharp in the center wide open but shows significant improvement when stopped down to f/4 or narrower; full-frame corners are soft wide open and only become decent at f/8, while light fall-off exceeds four stops at f/2.8. Build quality is excellent with a metal body and fixed petal hood, but the lens lacks filter threads and uses a rear gelatin filter slot; the front cap tends to come off easily. It is a specialty lens for professionals needing extreme wide-angle performance, though it has been replaced by the superior Mark II version.
