    Overview

The Jupiter-9 85mm f/2.0 is a Soviet copy of the Zeiss Sonnar, with notable sample variation. Optically, it is soft and low-contrast wide open, improving by f/2.8 in the center and f/5.6 in the midframe; corners sharpen at f/11. Vignetting is low at 1.6 EV wide open. Flare resistance is poor, producing ghosts. Build is all-aluminum, lightweight but scratch-prone; the focusing ring can be stiff, and the aperture ring lacks click stops. It suits portrait photographers seeking a vintage look, but not for landscape or architecture due to softness and flare issues.
