40mm · f/1.4
The Olympus G.Zuiko Auto-S 40mm f/1.4 is a compact, all-metal lens originally for half-frame PEN cameras, now popular on APS-C and MFT digital bodies. Optically, central sharpness is soft wide open but becomes excellent from f/4 to f/8, while edges remain poor to fair until f/4. Chromatic aberration is well controlled centrally but fringes at edges; distortion is low at -0.60% barrel. Bokeh can be pleasing but shows doughnut highlights and rings. Flare control is decent per ewoodsphoto, but ePhotozine notes contrast drops and artifacts with strong light. Build is solid and handling easy with bright viewfinder. It suits digital shooters wanting a classic look and compact size, especially on APS-C where its image circle fits well.
