    Overview

The Nikon Nikkor 28-45mm f/4.5 non-Ai, introduced in 1975, was the world's first true wide-angle zoom lens. Optically, it offers good sharpness wide open on low-resolution sensors, but is slightly softer than later zooms. It successfully controls distortion for its era. The build is compact, dense, and professional-grade, with a separate zoom and focus ring and a non-rotating front element. However, the slow f/4.5 aperture makes focusing difficult in low light. It suits photographers interested in classic engineering and a moderate wide-to-normal range, but may frustrate those needing speed or modern convenience.
